Lymphedema

Bandaging for lymphedema is usually comprised of a multi layer system. The first layer is for skin protection, this is usually a stockinette material. The second layer is a gauze like bandage for the fingers or toes. Over those base layers, a soft padding layer is applied to protect the skin and ensure even compression from the short stretch bandage. Next comes foam pads or pieces which can help break up fibrotic tissue, fill in skin folds and provide the correct shape for the final layer. The exterior layer in this system is short stretch bandages. This layer provides the compression. Graduated compression is achieved but using wider bandages as you move toward the torso.
